Le due province di nordest, l’Est e Ovest Azarbaijan, con Tabriz e Orumieh come loro rispettive capitali, sono tra le più ricche e fertili regioni Iraniane. La popolazione dell’ Azarbaijan parla un dialetto turco chiamato Azari. La regione è molto varia, da un punto geografico, con catene di montagne, fertili pianure ed un grande lago salato, il lago Orumieh. Nella regione si trovano, inoltre, due delle vette più alte dell’Iran, i monti Sbaland e Sahand. Nei nostri itinerari sono comprese alcune città e luoghi di interesse della provincia, oltre ad altri delle province confinanti di Ardebil e Zanjan. Tabriz, tra le principali città Iraniane che i viaggiatori provenienti via terra dalla Turchia vedevano, era capitale, nel tredicesimo secolo, ed ancora sotto la dinastia Black Sheep che governò da Tabriz nel quindicesimo secolo. Jahan-Shah (1436-1467 D.C.) fu un efficiente governatore, che allargò e rese più bella Tabriz, facendo costruire la Moschea Blue nel 1465.

Ardebil

Situata a più di 130 miglia a est di Tabriz, in un remoto angolo della regione, Ardebil ha guadagnato importanza in anni recenti e divenne così una provincia separata. La sua principale attrazione turistica è la tomba dello Sceicco Safi-eddin Ardebili, un filosofo Sufi del quattordicesimo secolo, universalmente stimato, che fissò la sua dimora a Ardebil. Dopo la sua morte, all’età di 83 anni, il suo mausoleo è diventato la Mecca per migliaia di pellegrini, ogni anno.Shah Isma’il, fondatore della dinastia dei Safavidi, fu il sesto nella discendenza dello Sceicco Safieddin, che diede il nome ai Safavidi. Il santuario accrebbe di importanza con il patronage dei Re Safavidi, che lo ingrandirono e lo abbellirono con molti doni.

Maraghe

Una vasta città, novanta miglia a sud di Tabriz, era il pascolo dei cavalli mongoli. Hulagu Khan, il nipote di Chengiz, vi costruì un osservatorio nel 1295. In tutta la città sono sparse torri delle tombe pre-Mongole del dodicesimo e quattordicesimo secolo. Una delle più interessanti è la Gonbad-e-Kabud, o Torre Blue. Un fregio in caratteri Kufic corre lungo la base del tetto, sotto un cornicione di stalattite.

Maku

La chiesa di San Thaddeus, anche nota come Qara Kilisa o Chiesa Nera, si trova a tredici miglia a sud di Maku. E’ una delle più vecchie chiese del Cristianesimo, e mantiene uno speciale significato per la minoranza Armena, che colà si riunisce ogni anno, in luglio, per le festività di San Thaddeus, il primo Apostolo cristiano che la fu martirizzato. L’edificio originario fu costruito intorno al decimo secolo D.C. con pietre bianche e nere.
