Molte città e paesi delle province a est e nordest dell’Iran sono situati lungo, o nei pressi, della antica strada della seta, la vecchia rotta delle caravane, denominata the Great Khorassan Road. Resti di interessanti carvaserragli, chiamati’robat’, numerosi in questa area, sono appunto testimonianza di quanto detto. Molti di questi luoghi sono inseriti nei nostri itinerari da Tehran alla provincia di Khorassan, attraverso la strada nord verso Gorgan, o attraverso le più interessanti vie verso Semnan, Damghan, Sharud e Sabzavar, a circa 600 miglia da Mashad.

Semnan

E’ una antica città che probabilmente risale all’era dei Sassanidi, situata lungo il percorso delle invasioni storiche e, per questo, ripetutamente saccheggiata e ricostruita. Vi si trovano alcuni luoghi sacri mussulmani, come la Moschea del Venerdì, che risale al 1424,il minareto Seljuq, noto come Minar-eMasjid e la Moschea Soltani. Costruita durante il regno del re Qajar Fath-Ali Shah nel 1820, questa grande moschea è una delle più belle costruzione dell’epoca rimaste intatte.

Damghan

Questa città storica, fondata nel lontano ottavo secolo D.C., è nota fra le altre cose per i suoi pistacci. Deve la sua fama al Masjid-e-Tarikhane, la più antica costruzione dell’Iran, considerata un importante elemento di transizione tra l’architettura Sassanide e quella Islamica. Altri monumenti interessanti di Damghan sono un minareto Seljuq, l’unico resto di una moschea scomparsa da tempo, un’altra torre tombale sempre Seljuq, che risale al 1026, ed il Chehel Dokhtar (Forty Maidens), anch’esso una costruzione Seljuq.

Neishabur

Farid-al-din Attar chimico, fu anche un poeta mistico, che visse nella capitale Seljuq di Neishabur all’epoca in cui la Persia soffrì la prima invasione dei Mongoli nel 1220 D.C.. Egli fu catturato e decapitato dai Mongoli. Attar fu uno scrittore sensibile e prolifico, meglio conosciuto per il suo racconto mistico ‘Il Convegno degli Uccelli’. Egli è seppellito a Neishabur, in una tomba ricoperta di piastrelle, che risale al diciasettesimo secolo. Un altro grande poeta, Omar Khayman, è anch’esso sepellito in città, in una tomba a forma di ombrello, piastrellata di rosa, con l’iscrizione ‘l’opera poetica di Khayman’.
